I am an anthropologist who has studied the history of Antigua for many years. I received my Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1994, but began my research in 1980. Some of the work included here comes from my dissertation, The Peculiar Class: The Formation, Collapse, and Re-formation of the Middle Class in Antigua, West Indies, 1843-1940. The piece on the U.S. bases in Antigua includes more recent research and is an attempt to take advantage of web publishing to include both images (maps and photos) and audio files. The pieces on St. Maarten go back to fieldwork I did in the late 1970s.
I welcome comments and I particularly welcome contributions to the photo archives, including not only photos, but video and audio files. You can upload photos and other files directly or send them to me. If you want me to include a research paper, or a link to a research paper, get in touch with me directly. I can be reached by email at this address: lowes.susan at gmail.com.
